Sports Massage
When you participate in sporting activities regularly, you are likely to experience myofascial pain resulting from a muscle or joint injury or the overuse/stress of specific parts of your anatomy. Dependent upon your preferred activity, you might be more prone to problems with either your neck, shoulders, back, knees, ankles, elbows or wrists.
At Perform Sports Therapy we can help you overcome these problems. Fully trained in sports massage, we can work on the sensitive trigger points that can cause related pain to other parts of the body. This pain can often result in bad posture as you compensate for the pain, causing pain elsewhere in your body.
The Benefits of Massage
If you play sport or exercise regularly you will be aware of the advantages of a regular sports massage. The manipulation relaxes the muscles and improves the blood flow to the muscle which accelerates the healing process.
During sporting activity your muscles burn oxygen and glucose and produce lactic acid. This builds up in the muscle and can result in tenderness. With gentle manipulation of the relevant area, I can help rid the muscles of toxins to make them healthy and relaxed, resulting in improved muscle function and tone to increase flexibility and mobility. As a result, you are less likely to become injured in future activities.
Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy Include:
- Rehabilitation and reduced risk of injuries
- Reduced muscle tension and metabolic waste
- Better flexibility and mobility
- Boosted performance
- Reduced anxiety/stress and promote relaxation
- Reduced pain with movement
- Strong flow of nutrients/oxygenated blood
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
This is a common problem if you play a sport that uses specific parts of the anatomy regularly, such as golfers and tennis players, who often experience pain in wrists, elbows and shoulders.
We can treat RSI by massage techniques designed to relax the tendons and muscles, boosting circulation to help the body eliminate toxins from the area and reduce swelling, thereby relieving pressure and pain and enabling the body to heal efficiently.
Neck and Shoulder Pain
As we often carry tension in our neck and shoulders, it is common for injuries to occur in this area, because our muscles are tense and not free to move. We can provide sports massage that will knead away that tension and relax muscle spasm. Trigger points (knots of muscle) are often found in the neck and shoulders which cause restriction of movement and tenderness. We can manipulate these trigger points and encourage the muscles to relax, enabling full pain-free movement.
Muscle Pain
Untreated injuries can result in scarred tissue, because this is the body’s natural way of trying to heal the injury. Unfortunately, this is not an effective way for our bodies to heal because this scarred tissue adheres to surrounding muscles and fascia, resulting in myofascial adhesions which restrict movement. This problem can occur in any part of your anatomy but is quite common in the calf muscle if you are an athlete, footballer, rugby or hockey player etc. We can apply massage techniques that will reduce the scarred tissue adhesions and decrease inflammation, resulting in restored pain-free mobility.
Preventative Method
For the more dedicated sports person, a regular sports massage can ensure that your body does not become stressed, which can result in irritability and sometimes a poor sleep pattern. This can make you more susceptible to injury! Sports massage therapy is a traditional method of helping our bodies to heal without intrusive treatment and well worth consideration as a preventative treatment. At Perform Sports Therapy we offer a block course of 6x 1 hour appointments.
